What does content mean?

Content is a buzz word today, what does content mean? It is gathering attention day by day. With progress in media and web it is becoming focal point in marketing world. In 1996 Bill gates has written the golden words that “Content is King” ( In his article he has mentioned that with ease to publish on internet, every user which can access internet potentially can create content on web. Advancements in social media have made this prediction a reality. Every user who can access internet is now developing and sharing content. It is text, audio, videos, art, graphics, apps, games, websites, all that can be a medium of content development and sharing is utilized.

Facebook, Tweeter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Google+ all these social media platforms are publishing the content developed and shared by their users. How many websites appear in a day on internet? May be a day is too large, as per an infographic by Qmee ( in 2014, there were 433k Tweets per minute, 293k status updates on Facebook, over 5 million videos viewed on You tube, and 571 new websites appeared in a minute.

Web content therefore is expanding day by day with remarkable growth. And that is where the complexity is, how to define content? So that it makes sense for a business which is intended to develop its presence on web and social media. It is so much out there, how to define what is meaningful and in what context? Context is important to not only define content but to create content. We need to understand the background and why content is there before understanding how to develop good content. In other words, content is there for an audience, we need to classify the audience, their needs and interests and look at the content from context perspective. It will all make sense then.

Interest before Content

For people content is what they are interested in. They seek information in all it means weather textual, visual, oral for one purpose and that purpose is their interest. They can be interested in entertainment, they can be interested in literature, or arts, or music. They can be interested in current affairs, politics, news. They can be interested in hobbies, collecting coins, biking, hiking or surfing. They can be interested in buying or selling a product. It is all about day to day life of a person and his or her interests.

Information before Content

If we are interested in a subject, what we actually seek? We seek information. Content itself may not necessary to be informative, as it may be for entertainment, sharing and fun. But it is important that one provides information about particular content, and hence produce more content which is informative and its purpose is to approach those who are interested in the subject or context.

Audience before Content

So what are we seeking for our content? Audience. If we can understand the context, interests and provide the information to our audience, we would be able to develop and deliver the right content to right audience. So it is important to work on the audience in detail, understand them and their needs.


It is a brief piece to inform our readers, what they need to look at, before they think about developing content. Content is all about context, interests, information and audience. In all its forms, very purpose of content is to satisfy the needs of its audience. Without understanding our audience, we cannot develop good content and may fail to deliver the value we seek to provide.
